Penelope's Nursery

I am really on a show and tell kick, aren't I?  I have been meaning to show you these pictures forever now.  This is what Penelope's nursery looks like.  She has never slept in here, not even once, but it is a very pretty, clothes and toy storage room.

The second I found out I was having a girl, I ordered two BlaBla mermaid dolls.  I had seen them years before and knew that I if I had a girl, I was going to do a mermaid nursery theme.  I used to work in a local art gallery in college and I started collecting mermaid pieces back then and I used them all in her room.

The duvet cover on the twin bed is from Pottery Barn and is organic.

We got her crib and shelves from IKEA (it's the Gulliver crib, but I can't find it on their site, so I wonder why they don't make it anymore??) and her crib bedding from Pottery Barn (they also don't make her pattern anymore, but they have several organic ones to choose from), again organic.

I must have put 10 different paint (no voc, of course) swatches on the wall, trying to pick the perfect shade of green. It was worth the effort, the green is exactly what I wanted.

The twin bed and dressers were my husband's, Peter, childhood bedroom furniture.  The accent color used to be a blue, but he painted pink over it for Penelope.  I would have loved some fancy Pottery Barn furniture, but I really like that her furniture has a good story and some history.

The bear and pig were hand knitted by Peter's grandmother.

That teddy bear plays a heart, white noise sound, when turned on and was mine when I was a baby.
A dream baby girl closet.  We were so blessed to have a ton of hand me down clothes given to her.  I am just now having to start buy clothes for Penelope.  She was a very well dressed baby.

And I loved the time I spent organizing her closet when I was pregnant.  When I was having a hard day early post partum, I would literally march myself up to her room and just look at it and take some deep breaths.  Looking at a perfectly clean and organized closet instantly calms me down and makes me happy.   I am weird, I know.  But after I told you about my house growing up, you understand!

The BlaBla dolls that inspired the whole room.  Penelope loves these dolls now, by the way, and she also has Mrs. Fox.  They make the best stuffed toys for little ones, the perfect size, well made, great design.

What is the theme in your baby's nursery?  What inspired it?

  1. My baby girl's nursery turned out nothing like I had envisioned. But it is beautiful and I love it. It does not have a particular theme, but is instead an eclectic room from pieces that were either given to me or made for her. I also put about 4 paint swatches on the wall and was surprised by my choice. My favorite color on the wall was my least favorite swatch color!

  2. We are just now starting on our nursery for when our daughter arrives (We're adopting!) and I shocked the world and went with blue for the walls :)

    We're doing a beachy/shabby chic theme...

    Should be interesting!!!

  3. Our baby's nursery theme is forest animals (with a focus on owls and foxes) and it is inspired by the animals that roam our backyard. The walls are robin's egg blue (even though we are expecting a girl...) and the room has lots of handmade touches (thanks to a very talented grandma). I am now 34 weeks pregnant and one of my favorite activities is spending time in the nursery, organizing baby clothes.

  4. Ethan's theme is sailboats like Pirate almost. There's whales and monkeys and everything. Granted like Penelope, he's never slept in his room and since we moved when he was about a month old it's not put together quite like Penelope's! I knew that I wanted something water related and while we were shopping we found the one thing we could both agree on. My husband wants to get the big Lego pirate ship to put in his room as well.

  5. i always figured i would have a girl and wanted to do a giraffe themed nursery featuring pinks, yellows and oranges and whites.

    but we had a boy! the walls of his room are a very friendly, calming gray-blue. accent colors are navy, green, brown and orange. rocket ships became the "official" theme - we have something called "elliot's universe" on the wall his crib is on. it's a "universe-scape" made out of wall decals, complete with a personalized rocket ship and friendly little aliens! trains, boats, cars, gundams and giraffes all play a role in his room too.

  6. I did a classic winnie the pooh theme because I had a girl the first time and thought that if I ever had a boy (which I did) it would be good to use for him too. And it was. Once Olivia was big enough (2) and Jackson was on the way, we moved her to her big girl room which was our old bedroom before we put the addition on. But now that Jackson is 3, we've kept the walls the same blue, green and cream colors but added trucks. It still works. :)

  7. Lexie's room is butterflies. I have been collecting butterflies since I was about 12, although none of those pieces ended up in her nursery. I chose a green similar to your for the walls, and the other colors are violet and pink.

    The next baby will have a teal and green nursery done in paisley, I think. If I want more than two kids, my husband says the second on has to be a surprise on the gender... This will be ERY hard for me, as I am such a planner and organizer. So think teal and green paisley could go boy or girl. :)

    Love Your nursery! Thanks for sharing.

  8. We're doing a gender-neutral bird-themed nursery for our little one coming sometime around January 4th. I'm so pleased with how it's turning out and I'm doing most of it myself. More info on our blog: www.cookingwiththejohnstons.com

    Another thought: I imagine that IKEA doesn't have that crib listed anymore because of the big recall in July. I know that most stores had to remake all of their cribs because they can no longer have the drop-down sides. Don't know if this is the case with the guliver or not, but I imagine the recall had something to do with it.

  9. @Jessica, it sounds beautiful! I know, isn't is amazing how paint can look so different on the wall and dry?
    @Brooke, I love beach design! I bet it is going to be awesome! And congrats!
    @Anna...that sounds amazing! How lucky for you to have a crafty grandma! And I know exactly what you mean, it was my favorite thing to do when I was pregnant too! Enjoy every moment.
    @Missy, so cool!
    @Smart Ass Sara...I love a practical mama!
    @Megs501... I know exactly what you mean. I would love to have that life experience of finding out at birth, but I just can't do it.
    @Leanne... I love the theme and hand made touches. It is going to be gorgeous! And yes, now that you mention it, I remember that and I think that is exactly why they don't sell it anymore.

  10. Number two is a girl - her name will be Lorelei, so I want to do mermaids so bad!

    however, the practical part of me says the butterflies that are currently in the nursery are just fine,
